Tengnoupal, May 1, 2026: Several civil society organisations in Tengnoupal district have jointly imposed a total shutdown on Saturday, protesting the alleged arbitrary arrest of social leader Mr. Otkhothang Baite.
The shutdown, scheduled from 5:00 AM to 5:00 PM, was announced by a coalition of groups including the Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Molnoi Area Welfare Council, Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Students’ Organisation, and Kuki Women Union & Human Rights bodies. The protest follows Baite’s arrest on April 30, which the organisations claim was unjustified.
In a joint press release, the organisations described Baite as a former chairman of Canan Veng, HTC Unit-XI, and a “dedicated and honest” leader. They stated that he had retired due to hearing impairment and was the sole breadwinner of his family.
The groups strongly criticised the police action, alleging that the arrest was based solely on inputs and FIRs filed by Meitei police personnel. They further claimed that Kuki-Zo leaders are being unfairly targeted, while others involved in violence are not being held accountable.
Calling for immediate intervention, the organisations urged central authorities and investigative agencies to ensure fairness and impartiality in the justice process. They emphasized that justice must not be influenced by communal considerations and appealed for maintaining unity and balance in the country.
The statement concluded with a call for justice, underscored by the slogan: “Let Justice Prevail.”
The shutdown is expected to affect normal life across Tengnoupal district, with essential services likely to face disruptions during the protest period.
