Henglep: Letzamang Haokip, Member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly representing the 57-Henglep (ST) Assembly Constituency, has strongly condemned the killing of a civilian identified as Lenminsang, son of Lenkhogin Haokip, allegedly at the hands of joint security forces at North Songkong village under Henglep Sub-Division.
Condemning the brutality of security forces, the legislator described the incident as “shocking” and expressed deep concern over the circumstances surrounding the death. He stated that the loss of a civilian life at the hands of those entrusted with protecting the public is deeply disturbing and unacceptable.
Haokip said the incident strikes at the very foundation of public trust and raises serious concerns that cannot be ignored. He emphasized that any death involving security personnel must be subjected to thorough scrutiny and accountability in accordance with the rule of law.
The MLA further highlighted allegations made by eyewitnesses regarding the events that followed the shooting. According to the statement, witnesses have alleged that after Lenminsang was shot, his clothes were removed and his lifeless body was taken away by the joint security forces.
More seriously, eyewitnesses have reportedly alleged that attempts were subsequently made to portray the incident as a fake encounter after the victim’s death. Haokip stated that if these allegations are found to be true, they would constitute a grave abuse of authority and a serious violation of the rule of law.
Calling the allegations extremely serious, the legislator said the matter warrants immediate attention and a transparent investigation. He stressed that the allegations cannot be ignored and must be examined through an impartial process capable of establishing the truth.
The MLA also expressed concern over the continued failure to recover and return the mortal remains of the deceased to his family. He said the inability to retrieve the body has compounded the pain and anguish of the bereaved family and has further intensified public concern over the incident.
“Every family has the right to perform the last rites of their loved one with dignity and respect,” Haokip stated, underscoring the humanitarian dimension of the issue.
In his statement, the legislator put forward several demands, including the immediate recovery and handover of the mortal remains of the deceased to his family. He also called for a thorough judicial and independent inquiry into the incident to ascertain the facts and determine responsibility.
Additionally, Haokip demanded stringent action against all those found responsible if any wrongdoing is established during the course of the investigation. He maintained that any attempt to conceal facts, tamper with evidence, or misrepresent the circumstances surrounding the death must be investigated thoroughly and dealt with strictly in accordance with the law.
The MLA concluded by extending his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and reaffirmed his support for their pursuit of truth and justice. He stated that he stands firmly with the family during this difficult time and urged the authorities to ensure accountability, transparency, and justice in the matter.
