Tension escalated in Ukhrul district after Mullam Village Authority reported that Mullam village came under a full-scale armed attack in the early hours of Friday.
According to an official statement issued by the village authority, the attack allegedly began with a blank gunshot heard around 1:00 AM. While the initial sound did not immediately raise alarm due to recent unrest in the area, a more intense assault reportedly followed at approximately 5:30 AM.
The attackers, suspected to be Tangkhul militants, allegedly carried out heavy and indiscriminate firing and set several houses ablaze. The violence left multiple individuals injured, with at least two severely wounded persons rescued at the time of reporting. Authorities also noted unconfirmed reports of additional injuries and one possible fatality.
The incident marks a significant escalation in the ongoing tensions in the region. The village authority described the attack as “unprovoked and premeditated,” calling it a grave development affecting civilian safety.
The statement also highlighted a series of recent incidents leading up to the attack. On April 19, armed individuals reportedly entered Mullam village lands and fired blank shots at farmers, triggering panic. Later the same day, village youths attempting to engage with the group were met with gunfire, though no casualties were reported. Another firing incident targeting farmers was reported on April 21, further heightening fear among residents.
“These repeated acts have created an atmosphere of sustained intimidation and disruption of daily life,” the statement read, noting that the community had shown restraint while hoping for a peaceful resolution.
In response to the deteriorating situation, the Mullam Village Authority has urged authorities in nearby areas, including Toungou and Sirarikhong, to intervene and take immediate steps toward de-escalation. However, the appeal has reportedly not yet been addressed.
The village authority has called on the government to act swiftly, warning that any further delay could result in more loss of innocent lives.
