The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a three-day total shutdown across Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur following the killing of two civilians in Ukhrul district, triggering fresh tensions in the region.
According to reports, the shutdown will be observed from midnight of April 20 to midnight of April 23. The decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the UNC along with various Naga civil society organisations.
The protest comes after two civilians were allegedly ambushed and shot dead along a highway in Ukhrul district. The incident has sparked outrage among Naga groups, who have strongly condemned the killings and termed it a serious threat to civilian safety.
As part of the shutdown, all commercial establishments, educational institutions, and vehicular movement will remain closed in Naga-dominated areas. However, essential services such as medical facilities and emergency operations will be exempted.
In addition, Naga organisations have planned candlelight vigils on the final day of the shutdown to honour the victims and express solidarity with their families.
The incident has once again highlighted the fragile security situation in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and sporadic violence continue to affect normal life.
Authorities are yet to confirm those responsible, while demands for enhanced security measures are growing across affected regions.
