In a significant development amid the ongoing scrutiny of the Manipur violence, the Supreme Court of India has directed that a controversial audio clip allegedly involving former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh be subjected to a comprehensive forensic examination.
The court’s directive came during a hearing focused on petitions seeking accountability and transparency in connection with the ethnic violence that has gripped the state since 2023. The bench emphasized the need to establish the authenticity and integrity of the audio recording, which has circulated widely and sparked political and public debate.
The audio clip is alleged to contain statements attributed to Biren Singh that could have serious implications if proven genuine. Petitioners argued that the contents of the recording point toward possible administrative complicity or prior knowledge of incidents related to the violence. In response, the court noted that any conclusions must be based strictly on verified evidence rather than speculation.
To ensure credibility, the Supreme Court instructed that the entire, unedited version of the audio be examined by a certified forensic laboratory. The analysis is expected to determine whether the recording has been tampered with, edited, or manipulated in any way. The findings will play a crucial role in guiding further legal proceedings.
The court also reiterated its broader concern over the handling of the Manipur situation and stressed the importance of maintaining public trust in institutions. It underlined that the rule of law must prevail and that all allegations—especially those involving high-ranking officials—must be investigated thoroughly and impartially.
Meanwhile, reactions have poured in from various political and civil society groups, with some welcoming the move as a step toward truth and accountability, while others cautioned against drawing premature conclusions before the forensic results are made public.
The matter is expected to come up for further hearing after the forensic report is submitted.
