Imphal: Following an intensive search operation lasting nearly 24 hours, security forces recovered the mortal remains of six persons believed to be among those abducted from Leilon Vaiphei on May 13, 2026, according to a brief statement issued by the police.
The six individuals were missing on the day three Kuki pastors were killed by suspected Naga militants while on their way to Kangpokpi from Churachandpur nearly a month ago. They were Rev. Dr. Vumthang Sitlhou, Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou and Pastor Kaigoulun Lhouvum, all belonging to Thadou Baptist Association.
The large-scale operation involved around 450 personnel drawn from the Manipur Police, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Assam Rifles. The search teams were assisted by sniffer dogs and forensic experts in combing the area for clues and locating the missing persons.
Police stated that the bodies were recovered on Tuesday afternoon after continuous search efforts in the region. While the identities of the deceased are yet to be officially confirmed, authorities said they are believed to be among those taken hostage from Leilon Vaiphei during the violence that erupted in the area last month.
Authorities said necessary legal formalities, including post-mortem procedures and identification processes, are currently being carried out. Police also confirmed that an investigation into the incident is underway.
No further details regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths or possible suspects have been disclosed so far. Local sources said that the 6 individuals might have been killed on the same day to avenge the brutal killing of three Kuki Church leaders.
