Kuki CSO Working Committee Alleges Targeted Attacks in Ukhrul, Urges Immediate Action
Ukhrul: The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul (WCKCSOs), has raised serious concerns over escalating tensions in the Litan–Sareikhong area of Manipur, alleging coordinated attacks on Kuki villages and civilians by Tangkhul militant elements and associated groups.
In a press statement issued on April 9, the committee claimed that credible ground reports point to the involvement of a Tangkhul militant group backed by Ashang Kasar, working in coordination with volunteers from Sikibung, Sinakeithel, and Thawai Tangkhul villages. The statement further alleged that these groups, along with pro-Biren Arambai Tenggol outfits, have been actively attempting to intensify unrest in the region.
According to the WCKCSOs, several Kuki villages—including Mongkot Chepu, Shangkai, and Zalenbung—have been repeatedly targeted. The group also reported that innocent commuters traveling along the Timpibung–Leplen stretch have come under attack, exacerbating fear and instability among civilians.
The committee stated that a fresh wave of aggression began on April 6 and continued until approximately 10:00 AM on April 9, during which Mongkot Chepu village experienced sustained intermittent gunfire. Similar incidents of provocation were reported in nearby areas, contributing to a climate of insecurity. The statement also raised concerns over alleged deceptive firing tactics intended to mislead and falsely portray Kuki groups as aggressors.
Despite these developments, the WCKCSOs asserted that Kuki communities have exercised “exceptional restraint.” It noted that precautionary advisories had been issued in good faith to ensure the safe and uninterrupted movement of participants attending a Tangkhul CSOs meeting.
The committee strongly rejected any narratives blaming the Kuki community for retaliatory violence or disruption of the said meeting, calling such claims “false, misleading, and designed to shield those actively working to derail peace.”
Holding the alleged armed militant groups accountable, the WCKCSOs stated that any escalation or disruption should be seen as the direct responsibility of those opposing reconciliation and fearing the restoration of peace between Tangkhul and Kuki communities in Ukhrul.
The organization called upon authorities to take immediate and decisive action to stop the attacks and ensure the safety of civilians. Reaffirming its commitment to peace, the WCKCSOs stated that it would not remain silent in the face of continued aggression and what it described as deliberate misinformation.
