Subject: Clarification on the Identity of the Guite Clan
The Kuki History & Identity Protection Committee would like to clarify that the Guite clan has often been incorrectly associated with the Thadou and Paite clans. In reality, the Guite is one of the oldest clans within the Kuki community, possessing its own distinct identity, history, and heritage.
Due to historical intermarriages—particularly between Guite men and Paite women—there has been some cultural blending. This has led to the adoption of the Paite dialect in certain regions, especially in areas such as New Lamka and parts of Chin State, Myanmar. However, language use alone should not be taken as an indication of clan affiliation.
The Committee emphasizes that speaking the Paite dialect does not equate to belonging to the Paite clan. The Guite clan maintains its unique lineage and identity, sharing ancestral ties with groups such as Doungel, Touthang, Saum, Lamhao, Lotjem, and Kilong. These are recognized as part of a broader family line commonly referred to as Shongthu/Shongja, indicating descent from a shared ancestry.
We urge for proper recognition and respect for the Guite clan’s distinct identity and heritage. This clarification is intended to promote a better understanding of the diversity and uniqueness within the Kuki community.
