Mizoram: Thousands march to support tribals in Manipur

Thousands of people across Mizoram participated in massive solidarity marches expressing support for tribal communities affected by the ongoing ethnic conflict in neighbouring Manipur.

The rallies, held in the state capital Aizawl as well as in multiple districts, were organised by a coalition of civil society groups under the NGOs Coordination Committee. Participants from all walks of life—including students, women’s groups, and community organisations—joined the demonstrations in large numbers, reflecting widespread concern over the situation in Manipur.

Senior political leaders, including Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga, ministers, and legislators cutting across party lines, also took part in the marches. Their participation underscored the broad-based political and social backing for the cause, though organisers sought to keep the movement largely non-partisan.

Carrying placards and banners, demonstrators voiced strong support for the Kuki-Zo tribal communities affected by violence in Manipur. Many demanded immediate intervention by the central and state governments to restore peace and ensure justice for victims. Protesters also condemned incidents of violence and human rights violations, particularly those involving women.

The marches come against the backdrop of the prolonged ethnic conflict in Manipur, which began in May 2023 between Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities and has led to significant loss of life, displacement, and destruction of property.

Organisers of the Mizoram rallies emphasized unity among tribal communities and called for an immediate end to violence, urging authorities to take concrete steps toward restoring normalcy and protecting vulnerable populations.
