KWU Alleges Three-Week Economic Blockade in Kamjong, Urges Govt Intervention Amid Rising Hardship

Imphal: The Kuki Women Union (KWU), Kamjong District, has alleged that residents of Chassad and nearby Kuki villages have been facing a prolonged economic blockade for nearly three weeks, severely affecting access to essential goods, free movement, and daily survival.

In a strongly worded press release issued today, the union accused certain groups from Kamjong of imposing restrictions that have allegedly denied Kukis access to Kamjong Bazaar and prevented them from purchasing basic commodities and necessities. The statement further claimed that movement through the Kamjong route connecting several Kuki villages had also been obstructed, leading to immense hardship for the local population.

Despite the situation, the KWU asserted that the people of Chassad have continued to exercise restraint and maintain peace. The union stated that no retaliatory restrictions had been imposed from their side and that members of the Tangkhul community, including vehicles and travellers, have continued to move freely through Chassad road even during night hours without obstruction.

Calling for urgent intervention, the women’s body emphasized that peaceful coexistence, humanity, and mutual respect among communities must prevail over hostility and discrimination. It appealed to the district administration and other responsible authorities to immediately address the matter and restore normalcy, free movement, and peaceful relations in the area.

The union also warned that continued inaction could further aggravate the suffering of innocent civilians who depend heavily on the affected roads and markets for their livelihood and daily needs.
The statement was issued in public interest by the Kuki Women Union (KWU), Kamjong District.
