Lamka:
The Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM), the apex body of the Kuki tribes, has strongly opposed a reported proposal to replace Central Security Forces with state forces in the hill and foothill areas of Manipur, warning that such a move could further destabilise the already fragile security situation in the state.
In a press release issued by Janghaolun Haokip, Secretary Information and Publicity, the organisation categorically rejected any attempt to alter the current security arrangement. It expressed serious concern over a statement attributed to the Home Minister of the Government of Manipur regarding the proposed replacement.
Kuki Inpi Manipur stated that the proposal appears to be an attempt to project an image of peace and stability while simultaneously reinforcing the state government’s control over Kuki-inhabited areas. The organisation alleged that such a move would perpetuate what it described as “undue oppression and subjugation” of the Kuki people.
Highlighting the ongoing volatility in the region, KIM said that the current situation is marked by a complete loss of credibility and accountability on the part of the state government. It warned that any change in the existing security arrangement under such circumstances could escalate tensions and potentially trigger further conflict on the ground.
“The proposal to replace Central forces with State forces is a deeply concerning development that could further destabilise the fragile security situation,” the statement noted.
The organisation reiterated that the Kuki community continues to place its trust in the Central Security Forces, which it credited with maintaining a degree of neutrality, stability, and protection amid the ongoing crisis. It stressed that their presence has been crucial in preventing further deterioration of law and order in affected areas.
Calling for continuity, Kuki Inpi Manipur urged that the deployment of Central forces be maintained in the interest of peace and stability. It also appealed to the Manipur State Government to refrain from intervening in matters concerning the Kuki people and their land.
