Senapati, April 19, 2026: The United Naga Council (UNC) has announced a three-day total shutdown across Naga-inhabited areas following the killing of two Naga civilians in Manipur’s Ukhrul district.
In a public statement issued after a joint emergency meeting held at its Tahamzam headquarters, the council strongly condemned the incident, describing it as a “barbaric and premeditated attack” on unarmed civilians. The meeting was attended by representatives of All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM), Naga Women’s Union (NWU), and various district apex bodies.
According to the UNC, the victims—identified as Mr. Chinaoshang Shokhwangnao (45) from Tashar village and Mr. Yaruingam Vashum (42) from Kharasom village—were killed along the NH-202 at TM-Kasom village. The council alleged that the attack was carried out by Kuki militants and termed it a direct assault on the dignity, safety, and territorial integrity of the Naga people.
Leaders present at the meeting observed a minute of silence in memory of the deceased and offered prayers led by CNPO President Thamdok Francis.
Expressing concern over the state government’s handling of the security situation, the UNC questioned the sincerity and effectiveness of existing measures, particularly in Naga areas. It noted that the incident occurred shortly after the visit of top state leaders to Ukhrul district, adding that they bear moral responsibility.
The council resolved to enforce a total shutdown from midnight of April 20 to midnight of April 23 across all Naga areas. During this period, all public and private institutions, business establishments, and vehicular movement will remain suspended, except for emergency services.
Additionally, a candlelight vigil will be held on April 23 from 6:30 PM in all Naga district headquarters and in Imphal to honor the victims and reaffirm the community’s commitment to peace.
The UNC also announced a temporary suspension of social and economic ties with Kuki communities during the mourning period, in line with customary practices.
The council has appealed to all Naga citizens, organizations, and institutions to cooperate fully in observing the resolutions.
