Imphal, April 15: Fresh tensions have surfaced in Manipur following widespread protests against the proposed relocation of cadres belonging to the United National Liberation Army (Manipur People’s Army) (UNLA-MPA) in the state’s peripheral regions.
According to reports, local residents in several fringe areas staged demonstrations expressing strong opposition to the move. Protesters raised concerns over security risks, alleging that the presence of armed cadres could further destabilize already sensitive zones affected by ethnic tensions and sporadic violence.
Civil society organisations and community leaders warned that such relocation without proper consultation could aggravate mistrust among communities. Many demanded greater transparency from the authorities, urging the government to clarify the purpose, terms, and security arrangements associated with the relocation plan.
Sources indicate that the proposal may be linked to ongoing peace initiatives and rehabilitation efforts involving militant groups. However, the lack of official communication has fueled speculation and fear among the public.
Security forces have been deployed in certain protest-hit areas to prevent escalation and maintain law and order. So far, no major incidents of violence have been reported, though the situation remains tense.
The Manipur government has yet to issue a detailed statement addressing the concerns. Observers note that handling the issue with sensitivity and inclusive dialogue will be crucial to avoid further unrest in the state.
