In a landmark decision, the Assam Cabinet has announced that the upcoming Electronics City in Jagiroad will be named ‘Ratan Tata Electronics City’ as a tribute to Ratan Tata, the late Chairman Emeritus of the Tata Group. This move acknowledges his pivotal role in Assam’s industrial progress, particularly through Tata Group’s investment in India’s first semiconductor plant in the state.

Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the naming reflects Assam’s gratitude for Tata’s visionary leadership, which has significantly influenced the region’s industrial landscape. As the first electronics city in Northeast India, this project aims to become a major hub for semiconductor and advanced electronics manufacturing, attracting investments and fostering technological innovation.

The Tata Group’s semiconductor initiative includes an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) unit, positioning Assam as a key player in the global semiconductor supply chain. Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran highlighted the importance of this initiative during the Assam Advantage 2.0 summit, underscoring its role in advancing India’s high-tech manufacturing sector.

Beyond semiconductors, Tata Group is also spearheading Assam’s clean energy transition with a ₹30,000 crore investment to develop 5GW of renewable energy capacity over the next five years. This initiative will encompass solar, wind, hydro, and energy storage projects, with the Assam government ensuring land allocation and streamlined approvals through a single-window clearance system.

These large-scale investments are expected to transform Assam into a technology and sustainable energy hub, generating 30,000 new jobs and reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in India’s industrial and technological growth.
