Two Youths Held with Suspected Contraband Amid UNC Shutdown in Manipur

Amid heightened tensions during the ongoing three-day shutdown called by the United Naga Council (UNC), two youths were apprehended in Sekmai area on Thursday after locals allegedly recovered suspected contraband from their possession.

The shutdown was imposed following the killing of two Naga individuals in an ambush along the Imphal–Ukhrul road, triggering protests and strict enforcement across several areas.

According to reports, residents of Namdilong under Sekmai Police Station were actively enforcing the bandh when they intercepted two youths travelling in a vehicle at around 2:30 pm. The individuals reportedly claimed to be from Kangpokpi district. However, their inability to communicate in Manipuri and failure to provide clear responses raised suspicion among the locals.

During a search conducted by the public, suspected ganja and approximately ₹30,000 in cash were allegedly recovered from the youths. In a subsequent reaction, locals set the vehicle on fire before informing authorities.

Upon receiving information, police personnel from Sekmai Police Station, along with IRB units and CDO teams, rushed to the scene. Security forces, including personnel from the BSF, later took the two youths into custody.

Officials confirmed that the detained individuals have been handed over for further investigation. The situation in the area remains tense but under control as security presence has been intensified.

Authorities have urged the public to maintain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
