Aizawl, April 16: Mizoram has recorded an impressive 94 per cent turnout in the home voting facility conducted ahead of the upcoming Aizawl Municipal Corporation elections scheduled for April 21.
According to officials from the State Election Commission, the special voting initiative witnessed strong participation from eligible voters, including senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and individuals with chronic illnesses. Out of 2,768 registered voters under this category, as many as 2,594 cast their votes during the four-day home voting exercise, which concluded on Thursday.
The home voting system was introduced to ensure inclusive participation by allowing vulnerable sections of society to exercise their franchise from the comfort of their homes. The initiative has been widely appreciated for enhancing accessibility and voter engagement.
Polling for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation will take place on April 21, with counting of votes scheduled for April 27.
A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, are contesting the elections, representing major political parties such as the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF), Congress, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The high turnout in home voting reflects growing awareness and participation in the democratic process, setting a positive tone ahead of the main polling day.
