Rival groups clash at All Tiwa Students’ Union HQ in Morigaon, Assam

A violent confrontation erupted between two rival factions of the All Tiwa Students’ Union (ATSU) at the organisation’s central office in Morigaon district on January 30, heightening tensions within the student body and bringing its internal divisions back into focus.

The incident took place at Majmajia, where a key meeting of the Morigaon district committee of the ATSU was being held at the union’s central office. The meeting was reportedly convened under the leadership of the Biman Pratim Masreng faction and was in progress when a group of student leaders aligned with the rival Prashanta Mosreng faction arrived at the premises.

According to sources, tensions flared when members of the Prashanta Mosreng group raised questions regarding the alleged breaking of a lock at the office. They reportedly confronted Morigaon district committee president Dipankar Maslaik over the issue, leading to a heated exchange of words. What began as a verbal dispute quickly escalated into a physical altercation, with members of both factions allegedly engaging in violence inside the office premises.

The sudden clash created chaos and panic among those present, forcing a halt to the meeting and disrupting the union’s organisational activities. While there were no immediate reports of serious injuries, the incident underscored the volatile atmosphere within the organisation and raised concerns about the safety of its members.

The confrontation has once again laid bare the deep-seated factionalism within the All Tiwa Students’ Union. Leaders from both sides have accused each other of instigating the violence, further complicating efforts to restore unity within the student body.

Police have been informed of the incident, and authorities are expected to gather more details as the situation develops. Meanwhile, senior leaders of the union are reportedly attempting to intervene and hold discussions with both factions in an effort to defuse tensions and prevent any further escalation of the dispute.
