A violent gunfight broke out early this morning between suspected members of the banned Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) (S Kamson) and armed Kuki underground groups near Kharam Vaiphei village in Kangpokpi district, triggering widespread panic in nearby villages, according to officials.
The clash reportedly began around 7:40 a.m. when the ZUF’s armed wing, the Zeliangrong Tiger Force (ZTF), launched an operation targeting illicit poppy cultivation and unauthorized underground camps in the area. Armed Kuki factions returned fire, leading to a brief but intense exchange of gunfire. No casualties were reported, and ZUF personnel are said to have safely returned to their camps.
The sounds of the gunfight were heard in areas bordering Imphal West district, stirring fears among villagers who are already wary of past violent incidents between armed groups in Manipur’s hill regions. In response, additional security forces were quickly deployed to maintain order and prevent further escalation.
In a statement, the ZUF S Kamson faction confirmed the operation at Kharam Vaiphei, Sadar Hills, Kangpokpi, aimed at Kuki underground outfits. The group claimed that several Kuki cadres may have been injured. The ZUF emphasized that the operation was prompted by concerns over alleged poppy cultivation, unauthorized camps under the Suspension of Operations (SoO) framework, and a topographical map supporting calls for a Separate Administration.
The ZUF also clarified that while it respects the legitimate aspirations of the Kuki people, it does not recognize Kuki territorial claims within Zeliangrong Inpui ancestral lands. The outfit warned of further consequences if encroachment on these areas continues and urged those unlawfully occupying the land to vacate immediately.
This incident underscores the ongoing territorial disputes and illicit activities in the region, highlighting the fragile security situation in Manipur’s hill districts despite ongoing peace efforts by state authorities.
