Kangpokpi: A complaint seeking registration of an FIR has been submitted to the Officer-in-Charge of Kangpokpi Police Station against several social media platforms accused of spreading alleged hate, false, and defamatory content capable of inflaming communal tensions.
The complaint was filed by Paojalal Hangshing, Assistant Secretary of Information and Publicity of Kuki Inpi Manipur (KIM).
In his complaint, he named WhatsApp channels “Behind the Truth” and “Zomi Info,” along with a Facebook page titled “Northeast Publish,” accusing them of publishing and circulating fabricated and misleading content concerning the organisation.
According to the complaint, the accused platforms allegedly circulated a fake and unverified press release falsely attributed to Kuki Inpi Manipur. The complainant alleged that the contents were deliberately fabricated and disseminated with malicious intent to tarnish the image of the organisation and mislead the public.
The complaint further stated that despite clarifications issued through KIM’s official social media platforms, the alleged misinformation continued to spread widely on social media. It alleged that the circulation of such content had the potential to provoke public disorder, inflame communal sentiments, and endanger peace and security in the region.
Referring to provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, the Information Technology Act, 2000, and other relevant laws relating to defamation and public mischief, the complainant urged the police to initiate immediate legal action against those responsible.
The complaint requested the police to register an FIR against the administrators and operators of the platforms concerned, investigate the origin and circulation of the alleged fabricated content, obtain digital records and subscriber details from the platforms, and prevent further circulation of the allegedly defamatory and inflammatory material.
Screenshots of the alleged posts and copies of the purported fake press release were also enclosed with the complaint as supporting evidence. Police authorities have not yet officially confirmed whether an FIR has been registered in connection with the complaint.
