Rafah Border With Egypt Partially Reopens After Months of Closure

Israel has partially reopened the Rafah border crossing with Egypt, the first movement at the crossing since Israeli forces took control in May of last year. The reopening is being implemented on a trial basis, allowing a limited number of Gaza residents to cross.

Israeli authorities overseeing aid and border operations in Gaza said preparations are underway for broader use of the crossing. A newly constructed screening facility has been completed to manage the flow of Palestinians entering and leaving Gaza.

The crossing had been mostly closed for months amid Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. According to Gaza officials, roughly 80,000 Palestinians who left during the conflict are now seeking to return.
