As Manipur nears one year under President’s Rule, uncertainty continues over the BJP’s plans to restore an elected government in the violence-hit state. The Assembly has remained in suspended animation since February 13, 2025, after prolonged ethnic clashes between the Meitei and Kuki communities led to the resignation of then Chief Minister N Biren Singh. Speculation intensified following a closed-door BJP meeting attended by over 30 MLAs but reportedly excluding Kuki legislators, while the party’s central leadership has given no clarity on reviving a popular government. If President’s Rule is extended beyond a year, Parliament will need to approve it during the upcoming budget session. Meanwhile, despite administrative and security measures by the Centre, deep ethnic divisions and the lack of a political roadmap continue to fuel uncertainty in the state.
