Central Observers Named by Election Commission for Polls in Five States

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the appointment of central observers for the forthcoming assembly elections in five states: West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory of Puducherry. These central observers, typically senior bureaucrats, are tasked with overseeing the conduct of free and fair elections, ensuring compliance with the model code of conduct, and monitoring the overall electoral process.

For West Bengal, the Commission has named a total of 25 senior officials as central observers. This group comprises 15 Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officers and 10 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers. Among the notable appointments are Jagdish Prasad Meena, the Home Secretary of West Bengal, and the Police Commissioners of Howrah and Asansol, highlighting the inclusion of top law enforcement officials in the list.

The Election Commission noted that it had repeatedly sought the West Bengal government’s recommendations for officials to be appointed as central observers. Specifically, the Commission requested the state government at least five times to submit a list of eligible officers. However, as no response was received within the stipulated timeframe, the ECI decided to finalize and release the list independently.

This step underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring timely preparations for the elections and maintaining impartial supervision of the electoral process. Central observers play a crucial role in coordinating between the state administration and the Election Commission, monitoring polling arrangements, and reporting any violations or irregularities directly to the ECI.
