The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert warning residents of dense to very dense fog in parts of northern India, including Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi, for today. Travelers and commuters are advised to exercise caution as visibility is expected to remain significantly low throughout the day.
In addition to these regions, the IMD has also predicted dense fog conditions in Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, and Sikkim, which are likely to persist until tomorrow. The weather department has further indicated that cold wave conditions may occur at isolated locations in Himachal Pradesh during this period, urging residents to take necessary precautions against the chill.
Meanwhile, the air quality in the Delhi-NCR region remains a concern, falling under the poor category. According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), the average Air Quality Index (AQI) of the National Capital was recorded at 271 as of 7 am today, indicating a level of pollution that can affect sensitive groups and warrant measures to minimize outdoor exposure.
Authorities have advised people to limit outdoor activities, wear masks if stepping out, and stay updated on weather and pollution alerts in the coming days as the region experiences continued fog and cold conditions.
