6th Khelo India Winter Games Kick Off in Leh; Figure Skating Makes Debut as Olympic Sport

The much-anticipated sixth edition of the Khelo India Winter Games has officially commenced in the picturesque city of Leh, located in the Union Territory of Ladakh. The prestigious event was formally inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta, who emphasized the importance of promoting winter sports among youth and nurturing talent from across the country.

This year’s edition of the Winter Games has drawn players from 21 States and Union Territories, all set to compete in a variety of ice-based sporting events, including Ice Hockey and Ice Skating. Notably, the current edition has introduced Figure Skating, a celebrated Olympic sport, marking its debut alongside the traditional events of speed skating and short track skating. This addition reflects the growing ambition of the Khelo India program to diversify winter sports and provide athletes with opportunities to excel on both national and international platforms.

The organizers have designated multiple venues across Leh to host the competitions. Ice Hockey events will take place at the NDS Ice Hockey Stadium and the Ice Hockey Rink at the Ladakh Scout Regimental Centre in Phyang, both known for their state-of-the-art facilities. Meanwhile, the Guphuk Frozen Pond, a natural ice surface renowned for its scenic surroundings, will serve as the venue for the Ice Skating events, offering a unique blend of sport and the stunning landscape of Ladakh.

The Khelo India Winter Games not only provide a platform for emerging athletes to showcase their skills but also aim to foster a culture of winter sports in regions where these activities have historically been limited. The inclusion of new events, such as figure skating, highlights the commitment of organizers to keep the games dynamic and aligned with global sporting trends.
