Mizoram Steps Up Energy Infrastructure with ₹676.98 Crore Tuirini Hydro Project

Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma laid the foundation stone for the ₹676.98 crore Tuirini hydroelectric power project on Monday, aimed at boosting the state’s power self-sufficiency. The 24 MW project will be funded through an external loan from the New Development Bank, with 80% of the cost borne by the Centre and 20% by the state.

The Chief Minister said the project is a key part of Mizoram’s long-term plan to reduce dependence on external power sources. He highlighted existing renewable initiatives, including two state-owned solar projects of 10 MW and 5 MW at Sumsui, and said more hydro and solar projects are planned.

Officials said DPRs for the 132 MW Tuirial hydro project have been completed, while the DPR for the Tlawng project is expected by September. EOIs have also been issued for solar plants at five locations, and seven rooftop solar units totaling 2.62 MW are already operational.

Lalduhoma also mentioned a proposed pump storage project at the Tuchiang River and noted that power trading has earned the state ₹172 crore, with a net profit of ₹87.21 crore. The Tuirini project is expected to be completed within five years.
