Bangladesh Minorities Take to Streets in Dhaka to Protest Violence

Various minority groups staged a protest in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka yesterday, calling on the government to take immediate action against rising violence, lawlessness and discrimination across Bangladesh.

The rally was organised by the Bangladesh Minority Lawyers Unity Alliance and led by its convener, freedom fighter and senior Supreme Court lawyer Dr J.K. Pal. Alliance member secretary Advocate Suman Kumar Roy moderated the programme.

Senior lawyers, minority leaders and representatives from several organisations joined the demonstration, expressing solidarity with the demands raised.

Addressing the gathering, speakers urged the Chief Adviser to act swiftly to restore the rule of law. They placed five key demands, including judicial probes into recent killings, exemplary punishment through speedy trial tribunals, equal representation of minorities in state institutions, deployment of the army to ensure security in the post-election period, and the unconditional release of detainees allegedly implicated in false cases.

Advocate Suman Kumar Roy said ongoing violence had created widespread fear among minority communities and warned that the situation could push them toward drastic measures, including boycotting elections.

Dr J.K. Pal described the state’s failure to safeguard citizens’ lives and property as deeply concerning and urged political leaders to take immediate steps to address the crisis.
