Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma on January 14 issued a strong warning against the exploitation of farmers during the ongoing paddy procurement season, stating that strict legal action will be taken against anyone buying paddy below the government-fixed minimum support price (MSP).
Speaking to the media in Diphu, Dr. Sarma said the procurement price of paddy has been fixed at ₹2,670 per quintal and stressed that the rate is non-negotiable. He cautioned private traders and other buyers against offering farmers lower prices, warning that such practices would not be tolerated. The Chief Minister said the government is closely monitoring procurement activities to ensure farmers receive fair and remunerative prices for their produce.
Dr. Sarma strongly criticised middlemen and unscrupulous traders, alleging that they often exploit farmers by taking advantage of their limited market access and urgent financial needs, forcing them into distress sales. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting farmers from such exploitation and ensuring that government benefits reach them directly.
Reiterating the government’s pro-farmer approach, the Chief Minister said safeguarding the interests of cultivators remains a top priority. He added that enforcement mechanisms are in place and any violation of procurement norms would invite strict punitive action as per the law.
In a major announcement aimed at strengthening local procurement infrastructure, Dr. Sarma said the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) is considering setting up rice mills in each Legislative Autonomous Council (LAC) under its jurisdiction. He said the initiative would reduce farmers’ dependence on private traders, promote local value addition, and ensure smoother procurement at fair prices.
The Chief Minister added that the proposed move would not only economically empower farmers but also support long-term agricultural sustainability in the hill districts by creating local processing capacity and employment opportunities.
