Eviction Threat Hangs Over 688 Bighas and 879 Families in Assam’s Bongaigaon

Tension has escalated across several villages in the Boitamari Revenue Circle of Bongaigaon district following the issuance of eviction notices to residents living on encroached government land. The notices, handed down by the Circle Officer, have created a sense of panic and uncertainty among hundreds of families who have called the area home for many years.

According to official reports, approximately 879 families have been living on nearly 688 bighas of government land in the Jogighopa area. Of these, Koreya Pahar village is home to around 383 families occupying roughly 320 bighas, while Bharalkundi Beel village houses 496 families, living on about 368 bighas of encroached land. Formal eviction notices have now been issued to residents of both villages by the Boitamari Revenue Circle Office.

The news has stirred widespread anxiety in the affected communities. While residents acknowledge the government’s right to reclaim public land, they have appealed for a temporary reprieve from eviction.

Many locals have expressed concerns about the timing, particularly with the ongoing cold wave and the imminent matriculation and higher secondary exams. They argue that carrying out evictions now would disrupt students’ preparations and their ability to sit for the crucial exams.

In a collective appeal to both the district administration and the state government, residents are urging the authorities to delay the eviction, allowing students to complete their exams and giving families time to make alternative arrangements.

As the situation in Koreya Pahar and Bharalkundi Beel remains tense, the community awaits a response from the authorities, who have yet to provide any clarification on when the eviction drive might take place.
