Youth Fatally Beaten in Meghalaya; Police Arrest Three Suspects

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has strongly condemned the brutal killing of a youth in West Garo Hills, assuring that those responsible will face strict action and urging citizens to maintain peace and communal harmony.

The incident occurred around 2 pm on January 9 in Goalgaon under Rajabala Police Station, where Dilseng M. Sangma, son of Gaban Ch. Marak from Amokgre village in Phulbari, was attacked by unidentified assailants. He was first taken to Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura for advanced treatment but died en route, raising concerns about law and order in the district.

Commenting on the tragedy, CM Sangma said, “Yesterday, there was a very tragic and unfortunate incident in Garo Hills, where one youth lost his life and another was seriously injured. We condemn this act and express our condolences to the bereaved family.” He added that the administration and police are fully engaged and assured, “All those involved in this heinous crime will be brought to justice.”

Following the attack, West Garo Hills Police conducted multiple raids, arresting three individuals, while investigations continue to identify and apprehend the remaining suspects. The Deputy Commissioner also met with civil society representatives to form a peace committee and discuss measures to maintain communal harmony.

An emergency review meeting was held late Friday night at the Superintendent of Police’s office in West Garo Hills. Senior officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, Superintendent and Additional Superintendent of Police, Circle Inspector, and representatives of the ACHIK NGO, reviewed the security situation, assessed investigative progress, and discussed immediate steps to ensure public safety.

Authorities are considering preventive measures, such as a potential night curfew and temporary suspension of internet services, to prevent unrest. Officials reiterated their commitment to a fair, impartial, and time-bound investigation, promising strict action against all involved.

CM Sangma also urged citizens to be cautious of rumours circulating on social media and rely only on verified information from official sources as the investigation continues.
