GUWAHATI: The Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court, Guwahati, on Wednesday remanded five individuals to judicial custody in connection with the ongoing investigation into the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. The accused were produced before the court following the completion of their police custody.
Those sent to judicial custody include NorthEast India Festival organiser Shyamkanu Mahanta, Zubeen’s manager Siddharth Sharma, his cousin Sandipan Garg, and two bodyguards — Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya. The order for their remand was issued after detailed proceedings in the court.
According to legal sources, none of the five accused moved for bail during the hearing. A senior advocate confirmed that they are likely to remain in judicial custody for the initial period, as no interim relief has been sought at this stage.
Reports further indicate that Mahanta and Sharma may be transferred to Baksa District Jail in Mushalpur, while temporary arrangements have been made to lodge all five at Guwahati Central Jail pending the completion of the transfer process.
It may be mentioned that Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19, 2025, following a swimming incident off St. John’s Island. He was rushed to Singapore General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. His untimely demise sent shockwaves across Assam and beyond, deeply affecting fans and the state’s cultural fraternity. The incident has since prompted widespread calls for a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
