Imphal: In a shocking attack, three prominent Kuki church leaders were killed in a militant ambush in Kangpokpi district, Manipur on Wednesday morning, and several others were injured.
The incident occurred around 10 am between Kotlen and Kotzim villages along the Imphal –Tamenglong highway. The church leaders, belonging to the Thadou Baptist Association (TBA), were reportedly travelling to Kangpokpi from Churachandpur after attending a United Baptist Convention conference in Churachandpur.
The deceased have been identified as Rev. Dr. V Sitlhou, former General Secretary of the Manipur Baptist Convention (MBC), Pastor Kaigoulun and Pastor Paogoulen. Several other church members, including pastors, sustained injuries and are being treated in nearby hospitals.
The killings have prompted indefinite shutdowns in Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal and Churachandpur, with Kuki bodies and student organisations calling for a shutdown and demanding swift justice. Authorities also reported blockades on National Highway-2, disrupting transport and trade in the region.
While no one has claimed any responsibility over the brutal attack on Kuki leaders, local sources alleged the involvement of Naga militants operating in the area, though these claims have been officially denied by the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF).
Multi organizations and individuals condemned the incident today. These includes Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland; Lalduhoma, Chief Minister of Mizoram, Y Khemchand, Chief Minister of Manipur and Conrad Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya.
