Security Response in Ukhrul Brings Relief Amid Concerns Over Misidentification

Ukhrul, Manipur | April 11, 2026
The Kuki CSO Working Committee has welcomed the recent decision to authorize security forces to respond to gunfire incidents in parts of Ukhrul, describing it as a necessary step toward restoring peace, despite delays that led to tragic consequences.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the committee noted that the delayed response resulted in the loss of two innocent lives in Thawai Kuki, injuries to three civilians in Mongkot Chepu, and the death of a BSF personnel, Constable Mithun Mandal of the 170/A Battalion. The development, however, has brought a sense of relief to residents across affected areas, including Mongkot Chepu, Shangkai, Zalenbung, and the Leplen–Tingpibung stretch.

The committee emphasized that the move could help curb escalating violence and improve safety in the region. At the same time, it raised serious concerns over the reported use of supersonic ammunition by Tangkhul militants, which allegedly creates misleading acoustic effects. Such tactics, it warned, increase the risk of misidentifying the source of gunfire and could lead to wrongful implications against Kuki communities.

Calling for caution, the organization stressed the importance of thoroughly verifying the origin of any gunfire before taking action.

“Let reason prevail. Let truth guide action. Let sanity overcome hate and propaganda,” the statement concluded.
