YPA Resolves Non-Participation in Manipur Government Formation

Lamka: The Young Paite Association (YPA), General Headquarters, has categorically stated that Kuki-Zo legislators and people will neither participate in nor support any process for the formation of a popular government in Manipur under the prevailing circumstances.

In a press release issued on Monday following a meeting held at its headquarters, signed by YPA President Lianmuangthang Valte and General Secretary T. Lawmpi, the YPA said it had taken serious note of reports suggesting steps were being initiated to form a new government in the state. The organisation unanimously resolved that participation in any such process was unacceptable for the Kuki-Zo community.

The YPA attributed its decision to what it described as the violent displacement and forced separation of the Kuki-Zo people from Meitei-dominated areas, stating that these developments have irreparably broken trust and peaceful coexistence. According to the association, the continuation of governance within the existing administrative framework of Manipur has become untenable for the Kuki-Zo people.

Reiterating its earlier stand, the YPA urged all Kuki-Zo MLAs to remain committed to their press statement dated May 12, 2023, which affirmed the inevitability of total political separation. The association cautioned that any compromise on this collective position would be unacceptable.

The YPA further appealed to the Kuki-Zo people, civil society organisations, MLAs and Suspension of Operations (SoO) groups to remain united and resolute in pursuing a political solution, which it said was the only path to lasting peace and security. It also called upon all stakeholders to refrain from engaging in any government formation process until the core political demands of the community are fully addressed.
