Violence in Assam’s Kokrajhar Claims One Life, Injures Four

One person was killed and four others sustained serious injuries after a violent clash broke out between two groups in Gaurinagar, under the Karigaon area of Assam’s Kokrajhar district, on Monday evening, January 19, police officials said.

The incident occurred around 7.30 pm, sparking panic and tension across the locality. The deceased has been identified as Sikhna Jwhwlao Bismit, a resident of Bagaribari under Rupsi. Preliminary information suggests that a minor altercation quickly escalated into violence, resulting in his death.

According to eyewitnesses and local sources, the situation turned volatile within a short span of time. During the clash, miscreants allegedly set a Scorpio vehicle on fire, further intensifying fear and chaos in the area and attracting large crowds.

Four people suffered serious injuries in the incident. They were identified as Mahesh Murmu and Sunil Murmu, both residents of Karigaon, and Jugiraj Brahma of Anthaigaon. The injured were rushed to Kokrajhar Medical College and Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Hospital authorities said their conditions are being closely monitored.

Preliminary reports indicate that the violence may have been triggered by a road accident. It is suspected that the Scorpio vehicle was involved in hitting two individuals, following which tensions flared and the situation spiralled out of control. However, police said the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the clash are yet to be confirmed.

Police personnel rushed to the spot soon after receiving information and managed to bring the situation under control. Security has been tightened in and around the area to prevent further escalation. Senior officials said an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident and identify those responsible.

At the time of filing this report, the situation in Gaurinagar remained tense but under control, with police maintaining a strong presence to ensure law and order.
