The Uttarakhand government has enacted the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, following the Governor’s approval, to bring procedural, administrative, and penal reforms to the UCC Act, 2024. The ordinance aims to simplify processes, strengthen transparency, and ensure effective implementation.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said Uttarakhand is setting an example for other states, highlighting that the UCC has enhanced women’s empowerment, child protection, and civil equality.
Since its enforcement on January 27, 2025, the UCC has digitized marriage registration, enabling couples to register online without visiting sub-registrar offices. Over 4.7 lakh marriages have been registered online in under a year, with certificates issued in about five days.
On the first anniversary, the state is observing “UCC Day” with awareness programs and public events across urban and rural areas. The amendments also align criminal and penal provisions with national legal codes and strengthen registration and appellate mechanisms.
