The Gauhati High Court has granted bail to Mahbubul Hoque, Chancellor of the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM), in connection with case number 54/2025, registered in Patharkandi, Sribhumi. However, his bail plea for a second case (55/2025) is scheduled for hearing tomorrow.
Last Friday, the court conducted a detailed hearing on Hoque’s bail application, deliberating extensively before announcing that a decision would be made by Monday. Hoque was arrested on February 21 by Sribhumi Police and later taken to Dispur Police Station for further investigation.
Following his arrest, he was presented before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Sribhumi district on February 24. Before the court appearance, he underwent a medical examination at Karimganj Civil Hospital after being transferred from Karimganj Sadar Police Station.
On February 25, the court placed Hoque in police custody for four days. Five other individuals—Hiramani Saikia, Bijoy Dutta, Rezzak Ali, Numaan Ahmed, and Imdadur Rahman—were also remanded for the same duration. Upon completion of their remand, all were brought before the court around 5 PM today.
Earlier today, Hoque and co-accused Numaan Ahmed were transferred from Dispur Police Station to Karimganj Police Station. As the Sribhumi Police did not seek an extension of remand, the court ordered Hoque’s transfer to judicial custody.
