US President Donald Trump has rescinded Canada’s invitation to join his newly established Board of Peace, marking the latest friction between the two North American neighbors. Trump announced the decision via a social media post, stating that the Board is withdrawing its invitation to Canada.
The move comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized Trump’s recent remarks at the World Economic Forum, where the US President claimed that Canada “lives because of the United States.” In a national address from Quebec City, Carney responded that Canada does not merely survive because of the US, but thrives as a nation in its own right. His speech followed a well-received address in Davos, Switzerland, where he drew attention to a growing rupture in the US-led, rules-based global order.
Meanwhile, European Union chief Antonio Costa expressed cautious support for the board. He noted that European leaders have serious reservations about its scope but are open to cooperating with the body in Gaza. The Board of Peace, chaired by Trump with extensive decision-making powers, is being promoted by the US as a new international forum for conflict resolution.
