Union Minister for Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasized that the future of Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be driven by smaller, efficient models rather than massive systems. He shared these insights during a private media interaction at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
The Minister highlighted that nearly 95% of global AI activity is currently managed by smaller models, a trend that aligns with India’s focus on affordable and application-specific AI solutions. He noted that India is developing 12 AI models, ranging from 50 billion to 120 billion parameters, capable of catering to enterprise needs across various sectors.
Mr. Vaishnaw also detailed India’s advancements along the AI value chain, covering model development, semiconductor manufacturing, infrastructure, and energy. He stated that India’s semiconductor program has made significant progress, with 10 plants under construction and three already in pilot production. Four additional plants are expected to start pilot and commercial production later this year.
The Minister pointed to emerging innovations, such as sound-to-sound AI, which he believes could reshape global AI applications. He expressed confidence that India is poised to become a leading innovator, backed by a dynamic startup ecosystem of over 200,000 startups, placing the country among the top three globally.
