Ukhrul: The media fraternity of Ukhrul district reached a historic milestone on Sunday with the inauguration of the Ukhrul Press Club (UPC) at Wino Tang, marking a significant step in strengthening local journalism. The inaugural event was graced by Sword Vashum, President of the Tangkhul Naga Long, as chief guest.
Members of the Ukhrul District Working Journalists’ Association (UDWJA), along with several dignitaries including Akui L. Shimray, Deputy General Manager of MSPDCL, Ukhrul, attended the ceremony.
The newly established press club is the first of its kind in Ukhrul since the formation of the UDWJA in 1998. Journalists and community members hailed the occasion as a landmark achievement, envisioning the UPC as a shared platform to promote collaboration, professionalism, and public service through responsible journalism.
In his address, R. Lester Makang, President of UDWJA, expressed heartfelt gratitude to individuals whose support made the establishment of the club possible. Among those acknowledged were Khashim Vashum (MLA, Chingai), Ningshem Vashum (DIG), Iyiringkon Ramung (Entrepreneur), Garnish Kashung (EE, PWD Ukhrul), Akui L. Shimray (DGM, MSPDCL Ukhrul), Themreishang Marei (EE, PHED Ukhrul), Shanngam Shaliwo (DFO, Senapati), Laishram Gitla (DFO, Ukhrul), Chermishan ASP (FRO, Ukhrul HQ), and Dr. Reisangmi Raikhan (MS, District Hospital Ukhrul).
Makang noted that the inauguration of the UPC marks a new chapter for local journalism, underscoring the importance of a free and dynamic press in advancing the district’s growth and transparency.
The launch of the Ukhrul Press Club stands as a testament to collective effort and community spirit, reflecting the district’s continued commitment to fostering an informed and engaged public sphere.
