A BJP leader in Tripura on Tuesday accused the Tipra Motha Party, a ruling ally in the state, of falsely claiming that she had left the BJP to join their ranks. Radhamala Debbarma said her attendance at a Tipra Motha public meeting in Demdum village was misrepresented through announcements and social media posts.
Debbarma clarified that she attended the meeting solely to meet party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, and had no intention of switching political allegiance. “I was informed by local workers that Debbarman wished to meet me. Despite political differences, Maharaj is a respected personality. The meeting venue was very close to my residence, so I went there. However, as soon as I arrived, announcements were made claiming that I had formally joined the Tipra Motha Party,” she said.
She further alleged that her photographs and videos from the event were circulated on social media to create a false impression that she had resigned from the BJP.
At the same press conference, BJP state general secretary Bipin Debbarma called the claims “completely baseless.” He said Radhamala Debbarma’s visit was purely a courtesy, as the meeting was nearby.
“When a senior leader comes close to one’s residence, it is customary to greet them. That is all she did. But Tipra Motha leader Dhirendra Debbarma twisted the incident and publicly claimed she had joined their party,” he said. He added that party workers had held Tipra Motha flags behind her to mislead viewers, and that she was not seen holding the flag or making any declaration in the visuals.
The BJP demanded that Tipra Motha stop spreading what it called misleading political propaganda and respect democratic norms.
