Step into Kuki territory at your own peril: KANAM warns FOCS

New Delhi | March 4, 2025

Ethnic tensions in Manipur is likely going to worsen as the Kuki Alliance for Nampi Awakening Movement (KANAM) issued a strong warning to the Federation of Civil Society Organisations (FOCS) against entering Kuki territories.

The statement, released today, cautioned FOCS and its alleged backers against proceeding with their planned “peace expedition” on March 8, calling it a provocation that could lead to serious consequences.

It may be mentioned that the Meitei civil organization FOCS make an announcement today that it will crossed into Kuki territories on 8th March, disregarding the buffer zones maintained by the two communities since the violence broke out in May 2023.

KANAM in its statement warned FOCS that any attempt to enter Kuki areas will be mean certain death. “Do not set foot in Kuki territories unless you are prepared to face the full consequences of your reckless provocation,” the group warned.

KANAM stated that the Manipur government no longer has authority over Kuki territories, asserting that its people have rejected state rule. The group also strongly opposed the movement of Meitei-led organizations into their land, stressing that there would be no safe passage for those responsible for past violence.

The statement make it clear that there won’t be any ‘free movement’ for those who commit inhuman atrocities to Kuki men and women, burnt and lotted homes and properties. “We have neither forgiven nor forgotten,” the statement added.
