Seismic Safety Takes Center Stage at NEDFi Conclave in Guwahati

A seismic safety awareness programme organised by NeFocus in collaboration with RVC was held today at the NEDFi Auditorium, highlighting the need for collective action to reduce earthquake risks in Northeast India.

The event brought together geoscientists, experts, students, researchers, and government officials to deliberate on effective earthquake management strategies. Gaikungam Rongmei, Director of the Earthquake Division at the Geological Survey of India, spoke on the region’s high seismic vulnerability and emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts in disaster preparedness.

Anand Kanu, UNICEF Coordinator, along with geologist Hemanta Borgohain, shared key insights on earthquake-resistant construction practices and the role of public awareness. A mock drill was also conducted to demonstrate preparedness and response measures during seismic emergencies.

More than 200 participants, including students, senior citizens, volunteers, and media personnel, attended the programme, reflecting the growing awareness and concern for seismic safety across the region.
