Security Forces Eradicate 95 Acres of Poppy Cultivation in Senapati and Chandel, Manipur

On 13 January 2026, joint operations by Manipur’s security forces and Forest Department resulted in the destruction of extensive poppy fields in Senapati and Chandel districts.

In Senapati district’s Sadim Hills range under Senapati Police Station, around 30 acres of poppy cultivation were destroyed under the supervision of an Executive Magistrate. Meanwhile, in Chandel district’s Govok Hill range under Chakpikarong Police Station, authorities eradicated approximately 65 acres of poppy fields, along with two temporary huts and poppy pods and seeds found on site.

In a parallel crackdown, the Manipur Police arrested three active cadres of the banned group KYKL (SOREPA) from Imphal West and Kakching districts. The arrested individuals are:

  • Keithelakpam Telheiba Mangang (23) of Kwakeithel Heinou Khongnembi, Imphal West, arrested from Kangabam Leikai.

  • Konthoujam Gooddy Meitei (23) of Joypur Khunou, Bishnupur, arrested from Kwakeithel Thokchom Leikai.

  • Laishram Ichan Devi (30) of Wabagai Terapishak, Kakching, arrested from Kwakeithel Bazar.

Police seized three mobile phones, four SIM cards, Rs. 6,000 in cash, and a Yamaha motorcycle from the trio. Sources say the arrested cadres were involved in recruitment, extortion in valley districts, and logistical support for their organisation.

Security forces continue search operations and area domination in vulnerable zones to prevent illegal activities. Measures have also been strengthened to ensure the safe movement of essential commodities along NH-37, with 165 vehicles carrying critical supplies escorted through sensitive stretches.

These coordinated efforts underline Manipur authorities’ ongoing commitment to curbing illegal narcotics cultivation and maintaining law and order across the state.
