A police investigation is underway in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills after a poster threatening members of the Garo community surfaced in Tura. The English-language poster warned residents in areas such as Phubari, Rajabala, Tikrikilla, Sesla, Garobadha and Turisori to vacate their land by 2027 or face consequences, while invoking the name of the Islamic State. Police said they are verifying the authenticity of the message and examining whether the use of an international terror group’s name was intended to mislead people and create fear. Security has been tightened in sensitive locations, and a case has been registered.
The state government has condemned the threat, calling it an attempt to disturb communal harmony, and assured strict action against those responsible. The incident comes amid heightened tensions following the recent killing of environmental activist Dilseng M. Sangma during a visit to an alleged illegal stone quarry in the Rajabala area. Authorities said intelligence coordination and community outreach efforts have been stepped up to prevent misinformation and maintain calm as investigations continue across Meghalaya.
