On January 23, Assam’s opposition parties urged the Election Commission to prevent misuse of Form 7, which is meant for deleting names from voter lists on specific grounds, during the ongoing Special Revision of electoral rolls. They alleged BJP agents have used it to target genuine voters, especially from minority communities, with some living voters even falsely marked as “dead.”
Left parties and Trinamool Congress highlighted bulk objections, incomplete or inaccurate details, and limited timeframes that disadvantage poor and marginalized voters. Data cited showed over 15,000 objections statewide, including thousands in Barak Valley, Hajo-Sualkuchi, and Mangaldoi.
The opposition demanded strict action against misuse, safeguards for eligible voters, and inclusion of names already in the updated National Register of Citizens. The Election Commission has yet to respond; the final electoral roll will be published on February 10.
