The Naga People’s Front (NPF) Manipur State Unit has issued an official clarification regarding its stance on the proposed delimitation process in Manipur. The statement comes in response to reports in local newspapers that suggested all political parties, including the NPF, had resolved to oppose the delimitation process.
In a press release signed by Honreikhui Kashung, General Secretary (Admin), NPF/MSU, the party emphasized that it does not oppose the delimitation process if and when it is officially initiated. The statement was made following an All Political Party Meeting held on March 25, 2025, at the NPP Conference Hall, Naoremthong, Imphal.
During the meeting, Mr. Kashung reportedly stated that as per the CEO of Manipur, there had been no official communication from the Election Commission of India (ECI) to the CEO Office, Manipur, regarding delimitation. Consequently, the topic was deemed irrelevant to the discussions at hand, which primarily revolved around a recent Supreme Court order published in the print media.
The NPF/MSU expressed disappointment over what it described as “irrelevant reports” in the media, which claimed that all political parties had unanimously opposed the delimitation process. Clarifying its position, the NPF/MSU stated that it does not oppose delimitation and will engage with the process when it is formally initiated.
The delimitation process has been a contentious issue in Manipur, with various political and civil society groups expressing differing opinions on its implications for electoral representation. With this clarification, the NPF Manipur State Unit seeks to distance itself from any blanket opposition to the process and reaffirm its commitment to democratic discussions.
The discussion happened in the wake of the Supreme Court’s instruction to the central government to speed up the process of delimitation in Manipur which has been delayed till 2026.
Earlier, Meitei groups in particular have voiced their opposition against Delimitation. The Meitei group speculated that it will reduced its representation in the state assembly whereas it will be a gain for the tribal communities.
