Nagaland Director General of Police Rupin Sharma on January 23 warned of strict action against NSCN (K) Khango cadres involved in the abduction and assault of a village headman, stating that authorities will pursue remaining accused if they fail to surrender.
Speaking at a press conference, Sharma, also a member of the Ceasefire Monitoring Group/Ceasefire Supervisory Board (CFMG/CFSB), said the movement of NSCN (K) Khango cadres near the CFSB office had been restricted. To prevent confrontation, police negotiated with the group, resulting in the surrender of three cadres connected to the January 19 abduction of village headman Zhimomi.
Sharma emphasized that maintaining law and order is the sole responsibility of security forces and law enforcement, and no faction has the authority to take such matters into its own hands. He added that allegations of illegal activities should be referred to the CFSB for resolution rather than resorting to abduction or violence.
“No faction can summon, abduct, detain, or threaten anyone. Supervisory Board offices exist only to maintain peace and prevent misunderstandings,” Sharma said, urging all groups to follow the ceasefire ground rules strictly.
Meanwhile, the CFMG/CFSB directed the NSCN (K) Khango group on January 22 to hand over seven cadres identified as the main accused in the case. Following a preliminary police investigation, a criminal case has been registered at Diphupar Police Station in Chümoukedima under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Nagaland Security Regulations (NSR).
