Meghalaya recently hosted a significant conference focused on advancing the poultry and livestock sectors in Northeast India. Organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in collaboration with the North Eastern Council (NEC) and the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), the two-day event commenced on February 28, drawing policymakers, industry experts, and entrepreneurs.
The conference opened with an address by Mr. Larsing M. Sawyan, Co-Chairman of the Meghalaya State Committee of ICC, followed by a keynote speech from Mr. M. Iboyaima Meitei, Adviser (Horticulture) at NEC. Other notable attendees included Dr. Bibeka Nanda Saikia, Dean of the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, and Mr. S. C. Sadhu, IAS, Secretary of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary, Government of Meghalaya.
Key discussions revolved around improving breeding techniques, enhancing disease control measures, and strengthening market linkages to ensure sustainable growth in the sector. Mr. Meitei introduced NEC’s Vision 2047, aiming for self-sufficiency in milk, egg, and fish production, while Dr. Saikia emphasized the role of technical interventions in sectoral progress.
With over 150 participants, including farmers, business owners, and government representatives, the conference served as a platform for exchanging ideas and addressing challenges. Stakeholders proposed initiatives such as formulating a dedicated dairy policy and implementing the Rashtriya Gokul Mission to unlock the region’s full potential in livestock development.
