The Manipur state government has ordered a two‑day extension of the temporary suspension of mobile internet services and mobile data (including broadband, VSATs and VPNs) in the five districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching and Bishnupur, effective from 2:00 PM on 12 April 2026.
The shutdown was initially imposed for three days starting 7 April 2026, but exemptions were granted for certain internet services like ILL and FTTH in a liberalised manner until 08‑04‑2026.
The state administration justified the extension, stating that the suspension of mobile internet and VPN services is necessary to curb the spread of disinformation, false rumours and the use of social media platforms (WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) or electronic devices for mobilising agitators and demonstrators, which could lead to loss of life, property damage or violent activities.
Invoking Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, the Governor has directed the suspension to remain in force for another two days from 2:00 PM on 12 April 2026. The order will be publicised through press and electronic media, and any violation will invite legal action under the emergency provisions of the rules.
The directive has been communicated to all relevant state officials, police authorities and internet service providers (including Airtel, Vodafone Idea, BSNL and others in Imphal) for immediate compliance.
