Reports indicate that an incident occurred at Vicar’s Green Primary School in London involving a child who was allegedly asked by school authorities to justify their religious practices. The student is also reported to have been removed from positions of responsibility within the school due to these practices.
If confirmed, such actions could potentially constitute direct religious discrimination under the UK’s Equality Act 2010.
INSIGHT UK, a social movement and advocacy organisation representing the British Hindu and Indian community, said that the child’s parents, along with other Hindu parents, sought to explain the religious significance of Hindu practices to the headteacher and school governors. However, they claim that their concerns were dismissed with responses they considered unacceptable.
“This was not a good-faith dialogue. It reflected an imbalance of power, where Hindu religious practices were scrutinised, minimised, and ultimately rejected,” a spokesperson for INSIGHT UK said.
